The glacier burst befell on the Rishiganga energy mission after a portion of Nanda Devi glacier broke off in Tapovan space of Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on seventh February morning and broken the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river.
National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) Tapovan Vishnugad mission on Dhauliganga river and Rishi Ganga Power Corporation Ltd’s mission, with a deliberate capability of 520 MW and 13.2 MW, respectively, have been almost washed away.

Many villages had been evacuated as floods swept away 5 bridges, broken houses and the close by NTPC energy plant, and washed away a small hydropower mission close to Rishiganga. National and state catastrophe response groups have been deployed, as have groups from the ITBP. The Army has despatched six columns and the Navy seven diving groups.
